What does CPR program teach?

MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 6-8) CURRICULUM "Building Healthy Futures"

The junior high age student is in the process of evaluating his or her values abut sexuality and is experiencing peer pressure to participate in risky behaviors.  This course leads the student to a better understanding of the complexity of these issues while stressing the importance of good self-esteem and respect for oneself and others.

The following is a basic outline of the topics taught in the junior high grade levels by the CPR program:

Day-by-Day Program Summary for Grade 6:

        Day A-- Anatomy, development of reproductive system

        Day B--Emotional needs, maturity, immediate gratification, decision-making by goal setting.
   
        Day C--Love, infatuation, setting limits, dating guidelines

        Day D--Physical, emotional, mental consequences of sexual involvement, including basic STD information, abuse

        Day E--Social maturity, peer pressure, self-esteem, effect of media, effects of alcohol and drug abuse


Day-by-Day Program Summary for Grade 7:

        Day A--Emotional & mental maturity, mature decision-making builds positive

                    relationships

        Day B--Respect for yourself and others, positive dating attitudes

        Day C--Possible consequences of premarital sex, STD information (more detailed -

                   transmission, symptoms, results, prevention), setting limits

        Day D--Pregnancy from conception to delivery, misinformation regarding pregnancy,

                   abuse

        Day E--Peer pressure, self-esteem, media influences, effects of alcohol and drug

                                                                    abuse
Day-by-Day Program Summary for Grade 8:

        Day A--Mature/immature behavior, handling pressure, consequences of sexual involvement, benefits for waiting

                  until marriage, abuse

        Day B--Healthy progression of a relationship including commitment; setting limits; qualities in a marriage partner

        Day C--Teen pregnancy, parenting, secondary abstinence

        Day D--STD review of facts, long-term effects of STDs, reality of "safe sex"

        Day E--Contrasting possible negative effects of premarital sexual involvement with positive effects of sex within

                  marriage, positive self-esteem, resisting pressures (peer & media), effects of alcohol and drug abuse


HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM (Grades 9 - 12) - "Choosing Healthy Lives"

At the high school level, students are actively evaluating values about sexuality. This course is designed to provide a framework for this evaluation, providing the high school student is in the process of evaluating his

or her values about sexuality and other risky behaviors.

The 5-day "Choosing Healthy Lives" high school curriculum is focused the whole-person. After reviewing possible personal consequences of sexual intimacy and then addressing the benefits of premarital abstinence in all areas of life with some examples of healthy relationships, students are given practical guidance and encouraged to develop a strategy for choosing and implementing goals such as abstinence from risky behaviors such as premarital sex, drug and alcohol abuse. Stress is put on showing students that premarital abstinence is a realistic and rewarding sexual choice for today's teens and contributes to the health of their relationships and society.

    3) An “Abstinence Plan”

Objective/Expected Outcomes
    • Articulate whole-person consequences of premarital sexual activity
    • Complete the STD graph assignment
    • Recognize their self worth
    • Identify reasons for teen sexual involvement

Day B

Content
    1) STD Power Point presentation
    2) A positive Relationship
    3) Dating Dilemmas

Objective/Expected Outcomes
    • Articulate qualities and choices that build positive relationships and the potential effects of sexual involvement
    • Participate in a discussion of common dating difficulties and solutions
    • Participate in a Creative Date assignment

Day C

Content
1) Freedom that abstinence brings
2) Love and infatuation
3) Compatibility Test

Objective/Expected Outcomes
    • Identify the qualities of a healthy relationship
    • Compare the characteristics of love and infatuation
    • Complete the “Compatibility Test”

Day D

Content
    1) Self-esteem
    2) Commitment in relationships
    3) Unplanned pregnancy

Objective/Expected Outcomes
    • Identify the dangers of having low self-esteem
    • Articulate the importance of whole-person bonding in a marriage relationship
    • Evaluate the difficulties of an unplanned pregnancy

DAY E

Content
    1) Effects of Alcohol Abuse Power Point presentation developed specifically for McKinley County Schools

    2) Healthy communication in relationships
    2) Effect of sexual activity on personal goals
    3) Secondary Abstinence

Objective/Expected Outcomes

  • Learn the effects of alcohol abuse on their goals

  • Learn the importance of healthy communication in a relationship

  • Verbalize the effect premarital sex may have on their goals

  • Identify the advantages of choosing abstinence until marriage

  • Sign a sexual abstinence-until marriage commitment card if they desire
