What is the Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) program?

The CPR programs are courses of sexuality and character education designed to meet the needs of students in 6th grade - high school.  The decisions made today about sexuality can indeed be "life-saving" ones!  These courses teach that abstinence from sexual activity and other destructive behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse is not only beneficial, but preferred for the physical, mental, social and emotional health of the individual.  Consequences in each of these areas are discussed.  Program components can include a parent information meeting, classroom instruction, and handouts for both students and parents.

Here is a summary of our philosophy:

  • CPR is committed to REDUCING RISKY BEHAVIOR AMONG TEENAGERS, thereby reducing teenage pregnancy, STDs, drug and alcohol abuse, and other negative consequences.

  • The core message of both the middle school and high school curriculum is that sexual abstinence is the healthiest choice to avoid the many negative consequences of premarital sexual activity.

  • Students are encouraged to consider the physical, mental, emotional and social aspects of human sexuality and the significant freedoms and benefits associated with choosing premarital abstinence.

  • Current and accurate facts regarding the risks of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy are provided to students in an age-appropriate, non-threatening environment.

  • The CPR curriculum provides young people with practical strategies for goal-setting, decision-making, maintaining self-control, planning for their dating life, setting safe limits for physical affection, and resisting peer pressure to engage in premarital sex, alcohol, and drugs.

  • CPR certified instructors communicate documented information through the use of videos, demonstrations, and games; actively involving students in the learning process.

  • CPR strongly believes that parents should be the primary educators in the area of sex education.

Why do we need the Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) program?

This page contains shocking statistics. More importantly, these statistics represent individuals and families tragically and unalterably affected by failed approaches to educate our teens:

The Federal Center for Disease Control estimates that:

  • 1 million pregnancies occur to teenage girls each year.

  • Teen cases of HIV double every fourteen months, and one in every 250 people in the nation are now infected with this deadly virus.

  • 63% of all STD cases occur among persons less than 25 years of age.

  • An estimated 1/3 of sexually active teenage girls are infected with chlamydia and/or human papilloma virus (HPV).

  • The National Institution of Health agrees that condoms offer little, if any protection against the transmission of HPV.

  • 95% of cervical cancers in the U.S. are due to prior exposure to human papilloma virus (HPV) which causes venereal warts. Most medical experts agree that condoms offer little, if any protection against the transmission of HPV.

In summary, the twin problems of teen pregnancy and disease continue unabated in the U.S., despite billions of dollars spent by all levels of government in support of "safer-sex" -- the promotion of condoms and birth control education as the preferred means to prevent these devastating problems. It is increasingly recognized that this "safe sex" approach promotes an unsubstantiated belief that sex outside the boundaries of marriage can be free of consequences. Soaring STD rates expose this fallacy and affirm the abstinence-until-marriage message as the HEALTHIEST choice.
